We started with a love of stand-up comedy and a desire to use this art form to educate, empower, and teach kids in underserved communities that their ideas matter.
Through group classes and one-on-one mentorship, students learn the basic fundamentals of stand-up comedy and craft their very own stand-up set. At the end of each session, the students perform their material on stage.
We piloted the program in 2016 at the New Los Angeles Charter School with two classes of very brave middle schoolers. In 2017 we completed nine sessions in eight different schools or organizations. We look forward to growing stand up with comedy across more schools and age ranges.
Alison Tigerman is a recent graduate of the University of Southern California, where she obtained her Master of Social and Community Planning from the Sol Price School of Policy, Planning, and Development. Prior to attending graduate school, her professional career and volunteer experience focused on the areas of community engagement, civic activism, and public health. Her interest in these areas was ignited in the early years of her academic career at the University of Illinois where she was a member of the college’s Habitat for Humanity chapter and took part in the East St. Louis Action Research project. After obtaining her Bachelor of Arts in Urban and Regional Planning, she moved to Los Angeles and continued to pursue these interests in her professional endeavors. Working with programs such as Mending Kids International and Cedars Sinai Medical Center’s COACH for Kids, and interning with local organizations such as the Arthritis Foundation and City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, she gained a deeper understanding of the need for open mindedness and thoughtful engagement within communities. Alison currently resides in Los Angeles.
